Are there other options to root canal treatment?
Usually the alternatives to a root canal are extraction, and extraction with implantation. Extraction without tooth replacement is not recommended as it can negatively affect remaining teeth, your facial balance, and chewing ability. Plus, most people do not like the thought of a toothless smile. It is important to move ahead quickly with endodontic treatment decisions. Once that tooth root becomes infected, pain and/or an abscess may soon follow. Dr. Davis will discuss the options available during your free consultation.

When is endodontic surgery necessary?
Endodontic surgery may be used in the diagnosis process if X-rays and physical tests are not conclusive. Surgery provides an intimate view of the tooth root and what may be causing your symptoms.

Surgery may also be needed if calcification of the root canal prevents removal of the tooth pulp. Occasionally, surgery is necessary to repair or redo a previous root canal that was not optimally performed.

Is endodontic therapy painful?
During the root canal procedure, you will be given local anesthetic and should feel nothing. After the procedure is complete, you may experience some pain in the tooth and jaw area. Dr. Davis may prescribe a prescription pain reliever to help minimize any discomfort.

Can any tooth be saved with a root canal?
Unfortunately, not all infected teeth will be good candidate for root canal. In some cases a tooth cannot be saved because the root is severely fractured, broken, or bone loss has occurred.

What are the signs that a root canal may be needed?
An infected tooth root will not go unnoticed for long. Most patients complain of tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, throbbing or aching, pain during biting or chewing, gum sensitivity, or night-time pain.

Is a crown always necessary following a root canal?
After a root canal, your tooth strength is less than what it once was. In most cases, a crown will be recommended to strengthen the natural enamel and protect the pulp-less tooth from damage. Sometimes a filling is used in combination with a crown for extra protection.
