Porcelain inlays or onlays are performed by Dr. Davis with the same purposes that porcelain fillings have – to repair damage done by decay and to strengthen and protect weakened or compromised enamel. Instead of being applied on the spot like the filling, an onlay or inlay is specially crafted in a lab using an impression of the tooth. Porcelain is the material of choice in the dental community thanks to its natural look, translucent surface, and strength after bonding. Inlays are recommended in single-tooth restorations; whereas the onlay is a more involved reconstruction that may cover one or several tooth cusps.
An inlay is similar to a filling and lies inside the cusp tips of the tooth. They are custom-made to fit the prepared cavity and are then cemented into place. An onlay is a more extensive reconstruction that covers one or more cusps of a tooth. Inlays or onlays may be used to replace simple fillings when a stronger alternative is needed.
The inlay/onlay process typically takes two dental visits. During your first visit, the decay or outdated filling is removed from the tooth cusp. The tooth/teeth will be slightly altered to prepare for the new placement, and a temporary sealant will be added. An impression of the area is taken, and sent to our high tech dental laboratory where your custom restoration is crafted. During your second visit with us, your temporary sealant is removed and the inlay/onlay is bonded in place and polished.
