Do I need sedation dentistry?
If you have only slight anxiety when visiting the dentist, you probably don’t need sedation. However, if your fear of the dentist either keeps you from attending regular check-ups and important treatment appointments or physiologically affects you during your appointments, sedation dentistry can provide a safe solution. Also, sedation dentistry is great for those who want to combine 2 or more treatments in one sitting.
Am I actually asleep during my dental treatment?
Although sedation dentistry is often called “sleep dentistry”, you are not actually asleep. You are in a state of deep relaxation, referred to as “conscious sedation”, and are able to respond. However, it is likely you will have no memory of your treatment.
Are my vital signs monitored during sedation?
Yes. Your vital signs will be monitored during sedation to ensure ultimate safety.
How long will I be affected by the medication?
It depends on the type of sedation and dosage amount. Most patients are under the effects of sedation for at least a few hours, and as many as six hours.
Do I need to bring someone with me?
Yes. If you are given a pill to take before arrival, you will need someone to drive you to your appointment. You will also need someone to drive you home as the medication can take a while to wear off.
